I chose this film for my Irene Dunne class because it shows the transition period between the more theatrical style that Dix represented, coming out of the silent era and Dunne, classically trained for the stage, who had a more naturalistic style that was her own. I do think the 1931 version, even without the benefit of color and the wide screen, is more epic than the Glenn Ford version.Stephen Reginaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17050782148081105899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3196652593714152340.post-45173452798176696052013-02-16T12:24:37.553-06:002013-02-16T12:24:37.553-06:00a few yrs ago I made myself a double bill of this ...a few yrs ago I made myself a double bill of this one and the remake. As much as I like Glenn Ford (also am a major Anne Baxter fan), and for all the widescreen hugeness of at all, the 60 one just didn't compare to me. Possibly a bit biased, as a bigger Irene Dunne fan, but I really do think she did a good job conveying the range from youthful optimism, to long suffering weariness, and covering all those years. And I just prefer the '31 treatment of the story, dated though some may find it. Though as I was getting into old movies, I found Dix an acquired taste for his, as you note, "theatrical" acting, I grew to really like him and here he made an excellent leading man not just for the movie but for Dunne; some strong actresses get too-weak costars. Have to re-watch it sometime soon...Kristinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11659951781597698530noreply@blogger.com
