When Jimmy Stewart returned from World War II, he quietly questioned whether film audiences would still remember him—and whether acting remained a worthwhile pursuit.

As a combat pilot, Stewart witnessed immense death and destruction. The war left a profound mark on him, leaving him searching for purpose upon returning home. Beyond his inner search for meaning, he wrestled with severe self-doubt: had he lost his acting ability during his years in uniform? Seven months after returning to the United States, he had not received a single film offer—until director Frank Capra pitched him an idea for a Christmas movie.

That project, of course, was It’s a Wonderful Life. Capra later admitted he did a poor job pitching the plot, but Stewart trusted his good friend and agreed to star in the film. Although the movie was not the immediate box-office smash Capra and Stewart had envisioned, it restored Stewart’s confidence as an actor. Over time, it grew to become the favorite film of both the actor and director, as well as a beloved holiday classic for millions around the globe.

Finding Wonderful acts as both a concise biography and an inspirational guide. It features excerpts from a journal Stewart kept during the war alongside timeless wisdom drawn from the movie. The book offers a glimpse into his early childhood in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where he was raised by hardworking, modest parents. Their devout Presbyterian faith and solid values shaped Stewart from a young age—traits he carried with him throughout his Hollywood career. When World War II broke out, his sense of duty made his decision to enlist clear and immediate.

While his military service was grueling, Stewart also navigated personal heartbreaks at home. He relished family life with his wife, Gloria, lovingly adopting her two sons, Ronald and Michael, before the couple welcomed twin daughters. Tragically, when Ronald was killed in action during the Vietnam War in 1969 at age 24, Stewart was devastated—a loss neither he nor Gloria ever fully recovered from.

Finding Wonderful serves as a poignant reminder of resilience and purpose, making it a fitting companion book to the feature film Jimmy, debuting in theaters on November 5, 2026.
