I’m a huge fan of Jeanne Crain. She was one of the most
popular movie stars from the mid-to-late 1940s to the early 1950s.
A favorite of studio chief Daryl F. Zanuck at 20th
Century-Fox, Crain was cast as the girl next door in the mold of Janet Gaynor,
several decades earlier. Like many actresses before her, Crain got tired of
playing teenagers when she was in her twenties, married with children.
It was the children that may have ended her career at Fox
earlier than Crain may have wanted. Crain had seven children during her tenure
at Fox. Since she was often pregnant, roles that Zanuck had planned for her had
to be shelved or given to other actresses. The most famous role that Crain
lost out to pregnancy was that of Eve Harrington in All About Eve.
